What to expect after making resin restorations

Tooth decay is a common dental problem and there are multiple ways to treat it, including composite resin restorations. After treatment, it is important to know what to expect and how to care for your teeth during recovery.

Postoperative care instructions

Once the cavity is removed, the space it leaves is filled with a composite resin restoration, which should last several years with the right care. There are, however, some postoperative instructions you should follow to make sure the filling stays intact and works properly. Here are some of the steps to take after receiving a composite resin restoration:

  • Practice good oral hygiene – Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily will help keep your teeth clean and healthy. It will also help prevent further decay or damage to the filling.
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods – Chewy candy and other sticky foods can damage the filling or pull it out completely. Hard foods such as nuts can also cause fractures in the tooth, so they are best avoided too.
  • You should avoid foods with colorings to prevent staining of the resin.
  • Resins should be checked periodically, since over time they can stain, wear down or fracture and will need replacing. No resin lasts forever. Expected lifespan: 5 to 8 years, depending on how well it is cared for.
  • Do not smoke cigarettes or cigars (including vaping).

What you may feel after treatment

Many patients experience a little sensitivity after receiving their composite resin restorations, and some may feel mild discomfort around the treated area as a result of the treatment itself. If this happens, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen until the symptoms subside (usually 24 hours). You may also notice slight discomfort when biting down; this is normal and is caused by pressure on the newly restored tooth. If symptoms persist beyond a few days, contact your dentist immediately.

Composite resin restorations are a safe and effective way to treat cavities and return teeth to their original structure and strength. With the right care — practicing good oral hygiene habits and avoiding hard or sticky foods — you can make sure your new filling stays intact for many years without any problems. And while some pain or discomfort after receiving your restoration can be normal, if symptoms persist beyond a few days contact your dentist right away, as this could be a sign of an infection or another complication of the treatment. Taking these precautions will help you get the most out of your composite resin restorations.
